Course Description

History recognises and examines the ways in which power is exercised, resisted, and experienced across whole populations and between groups. It recognises that these relationships are dynamic. History explores the ways in which power has been experienced and exercised intersectionally – across the lines of race, class, gender, sexual orientation, religious affiliation, and more.
Course Overview
Term 1
The Atomic Bomb - Students explore the development and reasons for deployment of the atomic bomb on Japan during World War 2. A focus on how the War in the Pacific affected New Zealand and a Catholic viewpoint on Atomic Weapons. Students will be developing the skills to analyse primary resources to find evidence to support their chosen research question.
Term 2
The Polynesian Panthers - Students will explore the individual roles of members of the Polynesian Panthers and how their activism had an impact on New Zealand Society. Topics covered within this unit includes the Civil Rights Movement in the United States of America (Martin Luther King, Black Panthers), the Dawn Raids and the Springbok Tour. Students will develop the skills of applying key Historical Aspects to the actions of individuals to explain how their involvement is a Significant Event to New Zealand.
Term 3
Students continue their work on the Polynesian Panthers and explore in depth the Springbok Tour of 1981. This is to prepare them for their exam in Term Four. Skills covered are study skills, essay writing and identifying perspectives.
Term 4
Students continue their work on the Polynesian Panthers and explore in depth the Springbok Tour of 1981. This is to prepare them for their exam in Term Four. Skills covered are study skills, essay writing and identifying perspectives.
