Level 1 History
Course Description
Teacher in Charge: Mr D. Griffiths.
History focuses on events of the past in order to understand today and the future. You will learn research skills, the ability to interpret perspectives and justify the significance of events to people in Aotearoa. This will be done through the skills of annotating and essay writing.
Course Overview
Term 1
The Atomic Bomb - Students explore the development and reasons for deployment of the atomic bomb on Japan during World War 2. A focus on how the War in the Pacific affected New Zealand and a Catholic viewpoint on Atomic Weapons. Students will be developing the skills to analyse primary resources to find evidence to support their chosen research question.
Term 2
The Polynesian Panthers - Students will explore the individual roles of members of the Polynesian Panthers and how their activism had an impact on New Zealand Society. Topics covered within this unit includes the Civil Rights Movement in the United States of America (Martin Luther King, Black Panthers), the Dawn Raids and the Springbok Tour. Students will develop the skills of applying key Historical Aspects to the actions of individuals to explain how their involvement is a Significant Event to New Zealand.
Term 3
Students explore the 1981 Springbok Tour and how rugby managed to polarise the country. Through applying Historical Concepts to individuals, students will be able to explain different perspectives for tour supporters and the opposing protestors. This is to prepare them for their exam(s) in Term Four. Skills covered are study skills, mind mapping, essay writing and identifying perspectives.
Term 4
Final prepartaions for External Exams. It is the expectation of this course that students complete one or both of the assessments.
