Level 1 Samoan
Course Description
This will lead to Level 2 Samoan and offer three internal and two external assessments, which are all endorsement papers. This emphasis is on producing a speech, interaction, and writing. Students will need to build their critical thinking and protocols about Samoan Language and culture through daily life. Students will be sharing and justifying information and ideas that are important.
This course is an introductory program for those with existing strengths in Gagana Samoa. This course will further skills and understanding through language components, and develop students' awareness of belongings, their life, and culture, through language and cultural knowledge. |
Course Overview
Term 1
What is it like to learn the Samoan language and culture in New Zealand?
For example:
* Identity as a Samoan and a New Zealand born
* Belief - what church do you belong
* Cultural Values - respect, love, and the truth
Term 2
Playing a role at any Samoan cultural event through interactions (church community, ethnic community, school, etc.)
For examples:
* Learn a Bible verse, a song, a poem, etc. for White Sunday
* Learn how to make s Samoan umu/ suavai.
* Learn how to serve 'ava at the 'ava ceremony
Term 3
Research and write about any famous people of Samoa, past and present.
Research on the similarities and differences between NZ and Samoa Education systems, and sports, as well as comparisons between Samoa and NZ in the past and now.
Revision for DGA school examinations end of the term.
Term 4
Preparation and Revision for NCEA Examinations
Catch up on any incomplete internal assessment before the end of the year.

Three Internal Assessments:
1. Achievement Standard 90904: Credits - 5
Prepared a spoken presentation that communicates information, ideas, and opinions.
2. Achievement Standard 90905: Credits - 4
Interact using spoken Samoan to communicate personal information, ideas, and opinions in different situations.
3. Achievement Standard 90907: Credits - 5
Write a variety of text types in Samoan on areas of most immediate relevance.
Two External Assessments:
4, Achievement Standard 90903: Credits - 5
Demonstrate understanding of a variety of spoken Samoan texts on areas of most immediate relevance.
5. Achievement Standard 90906: Credits - 5
Demonstrate understanding of a variety of written Samoan texts on areas of most immediate relevance.
